Belching or Burping is the release of air from the stomach through the mouth. Belching  2 to 3 times after meals is normal and is usually caused by swallowing air. If belching is more frequent, then other medical causes to be ruled out.

Common Causes:

  • Excessive swallowing of air along with food( it’s common in infants while breast feeding)
  • Having carbohydrate beverages
  • Habit
  • Acidity
  • Indigestion
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Gallbladder disorders

Symptoms:

  • Belching
  • Distention of abdomen
  • Abdominal discomfort

Home remedies / Herbal remedies:

1. Cumin seed:

  • Ingredients: Cumin seeds, water and salt.
  • Procedure: ¼  teaspoon of cumin seeds boiled in 200 ml of water & reduced to 100 ml and add 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  • Dose: Two times a day before food or after meals which helps in easy digestion of food and prevents from flatulence.

2. Ginger juice:

  • Ingredients: Ginger and salt.
  • Procedure: ½ teaspoon of ginger juice along with salt.
  • Dose: Two or three times a day before food.

3. Cumin & Asafoetida:

  • Ingredients: Cumin seeds, asafoetida, black pepper and salt
  • Procedure: Cumin seed 1 teaspoon, asafoetida 5 pinch, black pepper ¼ teaspoon, salt ¼ teaspoon all these ingredients are finely powdered and stored in air tight container.
  • Dose: ¼ to 1/2 teaspoon three times a day before food.

4. Betel leaf(Piper betle):

  • Having carminative action, chew betel leaf after each meal.

5. Somph/sauf(Feenel seed):

  • Chew 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of somph after each meal helps in digestion, removes bloating of the abdomen and bad breath.

6. Cardamom:

  • Ingredients: Cardamom and water.
  • Procedure: 1 teaspoon of cardamom powder boiled along with 200 ml of water and reduce to half glass,
  • Dose: Two to three times daily before or after food relieves belching, bloating and indigestion.

Ayurveda formulations:

  1. Hingwastaka choorna : ¼ tsp along with hot water, three times a day before food.
  2. Bhaskara lavana: ¼ tsp along with hot water, three times a day before or after food.
  3. Narikela lavana: ¼ tsp along with warm water before or after food.
  4. Nayopayam kashayam 15ml with 50 ml of water morning and evening before food.
  5. Dhanwantari vati 2 tablets three times a day before food.
  6. Jeerakarista: 20ml with 20ml of water twice daily after food.
  7. Abhayarista: 20ml with 20ml of water twice daily after food.

Do’s & Don’ts:

  • Eat slowly.
  • Don’t talk while eating.
  • Close your mouth while chewing.
  • Use ginger, asafoetida and cumin seeds along with food.
  • Try to avoid the habit of belching (repeated belching triggers more belching).
  • Stop smoking: when you inhale the smoke you may swallow air.
  • Relax the mind and body while having food.
  • Don’t sleep immediately after food.
  • Avoid drinking the liquids with straw, chewing gums, onion, chocolate and carbohydrate beverages.
